The game against Bromley in the L.F.A. Cup we fielded what was, in effect, our Reserve Team, consisting of: Wyllie; Bond, Cooper; Johnstone, Brown, Parker; Wragg, Smith (R), Stroud, Foan, Tucker.
The Kent amateurs put up a gallant resistance for the first half, and strove valiantly to keep us at bay. Apart from a goal by Tucker in the 26th minute they succeeded in holding us till half-time, but the tide went completely against them after the breather. An injury to their left-half made the struggle still greater, but it was obvious that even with a completely fit XI our visitors would have been overwhelmed by a more experienced side.
Stroud (58 mins.) and Tucker (73 mins.) made it 3—0 for us by the finish, but during the last quarter-of-an-hour we were toying with the opposition in a way which made it rather an uninteresting finish for the 1,650 spectators who braved the constant rain which made travelling to the match a miserable procedure.
We are now in the Second Round, the draw for which is: Briggs Sports or Fulham v West Ham United

We made two changes in our First XI for Tuesday night's Southern Floodlight Cup match v Leyton Orient. John Bond had his first senior game of the season in place of Noel Cantwell (on international duty) and Ken Brown took Malcolm Allison's place in view of our skipper's head injury. Before a " gate " of 14,500 we made a flying start, being three goals up in 19 minutes. The first came in the eighth minute from Musgrove, who hit home a rebound from inside the six-yard area after pressure that was so sustained that Gregory had not even handled the ball during that time! Eight minutes later a glorious move brought our second tally, the ball going from Malcolm to Smith and on to Dick for the inside-left to run through and side-foot it past Groombridge. Dick then made it 3—0 after Musgrove had tackled full-back Earl, gained possession and squared it into the middle.
There was a tendency for our lads to ease off a little after this, and the O's gained sufficient confidence to reduce the arrears through ex-Hammer Jimmy Andrews, who sent in a fine angle-shot in the 35th minute. Encouraged by this success the visitors redoubled their efforts, but 23 minutes after the interval Dick completed his hat-trick, after a run that took him past three defenders before he banged it into the corner from 20 yards out—and that really finished the Orient's rally, for the last 20 minutes were filled with mostly " exhibition stuff." Although there was some criticism at times of our " hold the ball " methods, it should be appreciated that for the last half-hour of the game we were virtually " nine men" against eleven, and this was an obvious tactical move in such circumstances. With Grice off the field and Wright a " passenger" at centre-forward our re-arranged team did well to hold their rivals, and the fact that we also scored during this period made our superiority most marked. Indeed there were few of the visiting side who could look back upon the game with satisfaction; and it could be fairly said that Andrews was probably the most thrustful of the O's forwards, his goal being a reward for enterprise in shooting whenever possible.
