Football Combination
At a meeting of the Football Combination it was finally agreed that the tournament should be divided into two Sections for the 1961-62 season. There will be a " Saturday " Section for those clubs who wish to normally play on Saturdays only, and a " Mid Week " Section for the remaining clubs who will play as and when they wish.
West Ham have entered for the Saturday Section, which will be comprised of the following clubs:
Arsenal, Bristol Rovers, Cardiff City, Colchester United, Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Luton Town, Mansfield Town, Northampton Town, Norwich City, Notts County, Nottingham Forest, Peterborough United, Plymouth Argyle, Shrewsbury Town, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United.

The most important of our Colts' matches during the past fortnight was the F.A. Youth Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur Colts at Upton Park on September 21st. It was indeed unfortunate that our two clubs should be paired in the Preliminary Round of this competition, for it meant that one of the possible leading contenders had to be eliminated in a tie that was one of those to reduce the original entry of 161 to 128. This seems very hard on teams which consist mainly of full professionals and apprentices, for on the score of training and coaching alone they have considerable advantages over their less-privileged opponents. We are one of several clubs who have raised this point, and are by no means alone in our suggestion that a system of seeding or qualification rounds should be played as is the case in the F.A. Cup competition.
The Spurs had two apprentices in their team and four full professionals (including Frank Saul—several times a First Team player). The Hammers were soon one down to their bigger opponents, but went into the lead before the interval through goals by Martin Britt and John Charles; between these we missed a penalty. We kept it up after the change-over, and skipper Martin Peters moved upfield to score a third goal that decided the issue in our favour.

Station Road Ground
3-2 (Lloyd 2, Dear)
23rd September 1961
During the last couple of weeks Jim Barrett has resumed a regular place in our "A" Team, and his coaching on the field has materially assisted the several apprentice professionals and amateurs included in the side. In addition Andy Malcolm had a couple of games in order to 'try out' after the injury he received against Nottingham Forest on 2nd September, and as a result we have met with more success than in earlier games, although the 6-1 win at Tonbridge was not quite sufficient to counter their 9-2 victory in the first leg.
The "A" Team that played against Guildford City Reserves at Josephs Road Ground in a game of seven goals, the Southern Leaguers got home by the odd one. Jimmy Ruffell hit another couple to bring his season's tally to seven and Roger Hugo netred the other.
FULHAM : London Challenge Cup (First Round)
Craven Cottage
3-2 (Brett 2, Crawford)
2nd October 1961
The visit to Craven Cottage to meet Fulham in the First Round of the London Challenge Cup, but as floodlights have not yet been installed at the West London ground the game was played in the afternoon before a very sparse attendance. the side fielded was largely of Reserve Team strength. The Hammers got right on top from the start and led by 2-0 after less than a quarter-of-an-hour's play. It seemed likely that we would keep adding to the lead, but Fulham took the chance to reduce their arrears when Jack Burkett was lying injured. Burkett was almost a passenger for the rest of the time as he could only hobble along, and we reshuffled so that Martin Peters took over in the No 3 position and Ron Boyce dropped into the rearguard. However, with about 20 minutes to go the Hammers went further ahead, and although the Cottagers got a late goal we were worthy winners by 3-2, Ron Brett (2) and Ian Crawford being our scorers. We are now home to either Chelsea or Charlton Athletic in the Second Round.
