The Hammers were first to score at the St Andrew's Ground, Ade Coker opening our account against Birmingham City Reserves. The Midlanders came back to equalise before half-time, but the scores remaind level until after the interval when we went behibd by 1-3 through defensive slips. However, we reduced the arrears when Trevor Brooking shot home from near the penalty-spot, and were a trifle unfortunate not to agin draw level.

The under-18 side began with a home game against Tottenham Hotspur at Chadwell Heath. Malcolm Smith put us in front with a header, but an "own goal" enabled the vistors to equalise before the interval. The second half was evenly-contested, and although scoreless, maintained its interest until the end. The 1-1 result was a fair reflection of the sides.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST : Football League
We made a few changes for Monday evening's duel with Bristol City Reserves but still included a large proportion of the players who made up last season's Youth Team.
The Hammers had a great opportunity to take the lead in the 18th minute when awarded a penalty for a foul, but Barry Barnes' shot rebounded from an upright. Nine minutes later we had another chance (this time when a visiting player was — possibly harshly adjudged to have handled); Alan Taylor accepted the nomination on this occasion, and effectively deceived the 'keeper to put us one up.
Seven minutes after the interval John Watson overlapped down the right and crossed for Dave Llewelyn to head home, and we held the margin until six minutes from time when persistency earned the Ashton Gate men a worthy " consolation." We ended 2-1 ahead.
The form of our youngsters was a pleasing feature, and although conceding age advantage they acquitted themselves well.
