We departed for Israel on the Monday after the final League game to play a return match with the National XI in Jaffa, following the Israelis' visit to Upton Park ealier that month.
This was part of their preperation for the World Cup elimination games; prior to our encounter they drew friendlies with Argentina and defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-3. However, they were subsequently eliminated from their Asian group when South Korea netted the only goal of the Final.
A 22,000 attendance saw us take the lead through Bryan Robson in the 20th minute, but on the stroke of half-time Israel got the equaliser. They went ahead after 21 minutes of the second half, but three minutes later Clyde Best made the final count 2-2.

Our squad was depleated by the absence of five "regulares" and in consequence the line-up was somewhat unusual for the Semi-Final against CSKA, the Bulgarian Army club. We did well enough in the first half to be only one down at the interval, but had to go over to the defensive after the resumption in order to have a chance of qualifying for the Final. This provided more opportunities for the opposing strikers, and in the end they were worthy winners by 3-0. Owing to the European Cup Final being transmitted "live" that evening, the kick-off was deferred until 10:45p.m. so the match did not end until half-an-hour after midnight.

REAL ZARAGOZA (Spain) : City of Zaragoza Trophy ~ 3rd 4th Play-off:
Zaragoza
0-2
31st May 1973
Seventeen hours after the CSKA match we were on the field again for the third - fourth place play-off v. Real Zaragoza. Oyr misfortunes continued when we hit the woodwork early on, and ywo minutes later were the victims of what was generally conceded as a harsh penalty award. Bobby Ferguson parried the first shot, but another opponent followed up to put his team ahead. We changed tactics in an endeavour to gain a quick equaliser, but a second goal before the interval extinguished our hopes and we lost 0-2
